Mechanical

A THERMAX infrared survey of Mechanical equipment usually involves moving or rotating equipment. Excessive heat is generated from friction which is caused by faulty bearings, inadequate lubrication, misalignment and misuse.

There are multiple benefits gained through the use of an infrared survey

  * Early detection of deteriorating bearings
* Allows scheduled maintenance where problems do not require immediate attention
* Lowers lost production costs

With some electromechanical components, infrared surveys are the only inspection technique which can determine if maintenance or repair is necessary. For example, a survey might show hotspots on feeding brushes inside a motor. This indicates poor contact due to uneven wear, and highlights the need for replacement.
Typical equipment that should be surveyed

* Gears
* Couplings
* Shafts
* V-belts
* Conveyors
* Air compressors
* Vacuum pumps

On the more critical bearings and gear boxes a trend analysis of the temperature can be done. THERMAX will then, using a windows based IRwin Report, be able to forecast when a critical temperature will be reached.

Statistics for failures

  * 50 % - Due to dust clogging
* 20 % - Over greased bearings
* 5 % - No grease in the bearings
